What the code actually requires
A basement sleeping room needs an emergency escape and rescue opening with a minimum net clear opening, a maximum sill height above the floor, and a window well large enough to climb out of with a permanent ladder when the well is deep. Your local code official has the final word, and we confirm the specifics with them for your municipality before cutting anything.
A basement without a bedroom may not require one. We will tell you honestly whether your project needs it or whether you simply want the daylight.
How the work is done
We excavate outside, saw-cut the foundation, set a header where required, install the window and the well, and — the part people forget — connect the well to drainage. A window well without drainage is a bucket against your foundation.
Why we do it before the finish work
Cutting a foundation wall is dusty, loud work. It happens early, before framing, and any water it reveals gets addressed before a single stud goes up.
